After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1981 with an English degree, Graham was a reporter with CBC Radio for seven years, working in newsrooms across the country. As a reporter for The Edmonton Journal he has worked on assignments in various parts of the world including Russia, Mexico and Afghanistan. He won a national B'nai Brith award for human rights reporting in 1997. In 2001, he was co-winner of the National Newspaper Award for spot news reporting. He moved to Alberta in 1984, expecting to stay two years. He never left.
